Giveaway: Review: New Release: Amour Mortel by Leah D.W.

Amour Mortel
Author: Leah D.W.
Genre: Paranormal Thriller
Releasing May 5, 2015 by Vamptasy Publishing

“You will always be mine”
She sought danger to prove her worth.
Now she is cursed with the consequences.
Trapped within herself and the arms of a monster, her only means of escape… is to become the monster.

Dark and intriguing!

Amour Mortel is a quick read but the story is not left lacking.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be under Dracula’s spell? Well step into the shoes of his mistress. Her mind is no longer her own. She lives for one purpose only, to please her master, a ruthless monster. Leah D.W. weaved a dark tale that pulled me in and had me searching for the light. Just when I would think something was going right I would find out I was oh so wrong. No sparkling vampires here. It reminds me more of the way vampire stories were once told, as them being unredeemable predators with no happy endings. Congratulations on a job well done, Leah.

Pick up your copy today and journey to the dark side.

Teaser 1
Glancing at the window covered in thick curtains, she swallowed bile at remembering the sight of those servants outside.
Their bodies were still out there, being picked clean by crows, with gaping mouths in eternally silent screams from the pain they endured at the hands of her master. Their shadows cast shapes of agony across the surface of the castle she now called home, but she never dared to look out a window or breathe in deeply when the wind blew against the fortress.

Teaser 2
A warm blaze was burning in the pit of her stomach, but then her master pushed her back down onto the couch and lowered himself on top of her. That fire within her slowly fizzled down into a small flickering flame that swelled within her chest.
Her arms snaked around his neck and she pulled him down, closer against her. His cool breath rolled over her cheek and sent pin pricks down her spine. Her body acted on its own. Her legs wrapped around his waist and her lips sought his. A growl rumbled from his throat before his lips brushed against hers.
A mumble escaped her lips as they played along his mouth and her heart rate picked up as she felt the slight touch of his tongue pushing between her lips. When she felt his desire for her pressing against her gown, his lips left hers to graze over the sensitive skin of her neck.
A whimper bubbled to the surface. The light touch of sharpened teeth ran over her throat. Her breath left her body when those fangs bit into her flesh and heat rushed up her neck to pool like hot oil at the crown of her head.

Teaser 3
“Hey!” he was up and grabbed her by the shoulders. “I saved your life!”
“You did no such thing!” she pushed against his chest. “You kidnapped me from my home.”
“Home?” he brushed wet hair from his face. “That place is a prison!”
“Take me back,” she pouted. “Or I shall go on my own.”
“I will not allow you to do that,” he took her hand then.
His grip was so soft, so warm, it felt like a dream. She glanced down at their clasped hands and back up at his eyes swirling with colours of bronze and hazel. She lost her voice as he stepped closer and touched a few fingers to her jaw.
“You asked me to save you,” he spoke calmly, but she could feel the pulse in his wrist jump. “You have my word that I shall do that and I have. You will no longer be bothered by that beast. My team and I will kill him and rid the land of his poison.”
“I won’t let you,” she felt like she was in a daze. “I will warn my master.”
His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed heavily and her eyes returned to the swell of his lips. She was cold and shivering, but having him so close made it easy for her to push those feelings away. All she felt was his touch…
“Lady,” he spoke while watching her lips. “Why do you insist on being with him? Do you know he is a vampire?”

Teaser 4
“Don’t do this,” her voice sounded strange to her, stronger perhaps.
His eyes flashed with something and his fangs peeked out. “Say you love me.”
Her mouth opened, but no words escaped them. She counted to four before taking in a deep breath and closing her lips again. His grip around her tightened sharply, his nails digging into her flesh and causing blood to surface on her skin.
“This has never happened before,” he frowned, slowly making her slim body lean down further. “No one has ever broken the spell.”
The fear drained from her entire body as his words echoed through the daze in her mind. Those words swirled through the fog over her eyes and soon were replaced by the voice of another man, one who had kidnapped her from her master…
“She is clearly under that monster’s spell!”
“Monster…” her lips mumbled.
“I will save you.”
She counted to four.
“Vampire!” she screamed at the top of her lungs as the fog snapped from her mind. “Murderer!”
“Silence!” his nails bit into her.
She winced and closed her eyes. “Monster!”

Teaser 5
“Lady…” he whispered roughly. “We shouldn’t.”
“We should,” she replied, slipping his shirt from his shoulder. “Save me from the monster in the castle,” she was breathless.“Save me, my hunter.”
His lips crushed hers breathlessly and his hands found the release on her corset. The sun kissed skin of his chest grazed over hers as her gown slipped from her shoulders and he pushed her down into the soft earth.
“Oui,” she whispered.
He didn’t hesitate.

She didn’t stop him.

Review: Cogs in Time Anthology (The Steamworks Series Book 1)

Go on an adventure through unheard of places in time and existence. Here in these remote areas, thriving cities, and secret worlds, a strange technological revolution reigns. Inside these pages inventors, dreamers, and revolutionist rule in worlds of steam driven machines, cog powered humanoids, clockwork miracles, and paranormal magic. Dressed in corsets, top hats, and cog lined finery the heroes and heroines face down immense obstacles as they take to the skies in airships, use incredible technology that is a mix between ancient and futuristic, and discover love.

Fifteen talented authors, artists and poets have come together in the must read anthology of 2014. The product of this collaboration is an incredible journey through a blend of sci-fi, fantasy, action, adventure, history, paranormal, and romance that embraces the roots of Steampunk while pushing the genre to new, bolder limits.

Stories by Catherine Stovall, Amanda Gatton (Illustrator), Robert Craven, Samantha Ketteman, Cindy J. Smith, Emma Michaels, Faith Marlow, Nina Stevens, Wayne Carey, Zoe Adams, MJ Baerman, Eada Janes, Andrea Staum, Deborah Dalton, SJ Davis, and Cecilia Clark.

I think this is a good time to remind you that my reviews are my opinion of the book, how I felt about it. You may or may not find that you agree with me. Keep that in mind as you read my reviews. Thank you.
Unfortunately overall I found that some of the stories were lacking and without point. However, that being said, a few were good and well worth the read.  My favorites are Wren City by Catherine Stovall, Invisible Sun by S.J. Davis and Point of Departure by Wayne Carey. I would love for these to be expanded into full book and series. I feel they are amazing stories with great potential for so much more. I believe just these stories alone was worth the cost. These are the ones that stood out to me the most but there are other good ones worth reading.

There are others that I found interesting, I just wish there was more to them. I don’t feel that it is just the length of the story that makes it more meaningful, but the quality of the story. I would like for them to have more meat to them. I will not bother to list all the stories by rating. I found stories to be from 2 stars all the way up to 5 stars.

Review: Unleashed by Janae Mitchell

But it's just a game...

When Jailyn's best friend, Prestley, brought in a new game, Jailyn didn't want to play. However, after a little persuading, she gave in. Unbeknownst to the girls, they weren't playing a game. Instead, the game was playing them.

What happens when an evil is unleashed... and that evil has its sights set on the one who unleashed it?

Janae Mitchell has a way with words. I found this story interesting and eerie. I was drawn right in and found myself dreading what would happen next. I can feel many emotions while reading a book, but very few writers has been able creep me out like Janae did with this one. Ouija boards has always creeped me out, but even if they hadn’t before, I believe Janae would have just successfully succeeded. Unleashed is a fantastic and horrific story, equipped with possession and death, with a little bit of a love story mixed in. It has everything you could want in this kind of book and more.
Jailyn and Prestley are friends that one day make the horrible decision to try out an Ouija board. After that everything goes to hell with; mysterious sound, people missing, and Jailyn being stalked. Jailyn finally has to enlist help, but who should she trust and who will ultimately betray her? Will it ever be over? Or is it just the beginning?

Shannon Tyo has a great voice to listen to and she brings life to Unleased by reading with such great passion and emotion. I was so happy to find that she was NOT a monotone reader. A good book can be ruined with a bad narration and I believe Shannon’s narration enhanced the overall feel of Unleashed. She also read at a good speed, not too slow or too fast.

There is only one problem that I found. There is little to no voice differentiation for each character. Every character sounded the same, but aside from that her performance was spectacular. So if the voice not changing for each character is not a problem for you, you should love this narration. I would defiantly listen to more books narrated by her.

Janae is a fabulous writer and with Shannon’s narration this book is brought to life in living color. Congratulations on a job well done ladies.

Review: Dissension (Chronicles of the Uprising Book 1) by Katie Salidas

Nominated for the RONE award.

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost. But not all survivors were human.

In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators.

And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising...and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city’s Regent, her destiny is changed forever.

Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira’s patron – changes more than just Lucian’s perception about vampire kind. The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted – a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers.

Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?

A great start for a fabulous series. Dissension is full of action and danger. Even though everything looks hopeless for the vampires, Katie Salidas is able to express a bit of hope for Mira and her kind through her writing. She had me rooting for the vampires and feeling hostility toward the humans. With a great storyline and well developed characters it was easy to step right into the book and experience everything right along with the characters. I found this story to be exciting and captivating. Experience this journey for yourself and be ready for some unexpected twist and a great ride. Dissension is well worth the read.

Doomsday has come and only a fraction of humans remain. The vampires had to come out of the shadows and for a time lived in harmony with the humans. Until one day the humans decided to enslave all vampires by using their weaknesses. Now Mira is being held in a prison and is forced to fight to the death with others of her kind on a regular basis with no hope for escape. Until one day when she meets someone who has the power to change it all. Will Mira escape the torture and death that has become her life? Or will betrayal be her only reward?

The hair on the back of Mira's neck prickled. An uncomfortable weight of unseen eyes settled on her. Dread sank to the pit of her stomach. Busted...and so close to escaping. Someone else was there, watching her. She felt it, but what was more unsettling was the fact they had yet to announce themselves. Guards would shoot first and ask questions later. Someone lurking in the shadows… there was no telling what game they’d be playing.

Mira turned around and stood next to the guard she had just felled. It didn’t take much for her to find the source of her unease. A pair of mossy green eyes scrutinized her from the opposite end of the hall.

Heart pounding, she stared back at the man attached to those quizzical eyes. Human, no doubt. But he didn’t carry a weapon. Nor was there any fear in those green eyes of his. On the contrary, alone in a dark corridor, he stood his ground, lifting his head, and stared Mira down like an alpha from some long lost wolf pack.

The strangeness of his manner caught Mira by surprise. For a few moments too long, she stood dumbfounded, trying to process who he was and what her next move should be. His face seemed oddly familiar, though at the moment she couldn’t place where she’d seen him before.

The strange man was tall and well built, but that really didn’t matter much. Mira could take down vampires larger than she with no problem. But that wasn’t the thing stopping her from making a move. Judging by the deep plum of his suit, he was a man of some power. Only the Elite – those in the ruling class – were ever permitted to wear such an audacious color. As desperate as Mira was at that moment, she needed to tread carefully. Being caught escaping—again—would earn her more time in the light box, but injuring an Elite could have her staked out in the middle of town square awaiting the dawn.

“Aren't you going to finish him?” the man asked, his tone calm, soothing, as if he genuinely wanted to know the answer.

“Why don’t I finish you instead?” She hoped the warning in her voice would be enough to deter him, but still the man remained unfazed, like some stoic statue across the hallway. What was he playing at?And why was he just standing there, calmly, giving her every opportunity to strike? Did he really place so little value on his life?

“You could kill me, sure, but ask yourself how that is going to help your situation.” Spoken like a true Elite. He had to be up to something.

She didn’t like the smugness in tone, but felt at a loss as to how to continue. She could be on him in a fraction of a second. Crush his windpipe, and maybe buy herself a few more minutes to find the exit, but she was lost and had already wasted too much time. However, her inaction was almost certain to earn her some additional reprisal as well.

The corner of his lip quirked up. “I take it by your lack of response, that you’ve decided against harming me?”

Damn him! He knew she couldn’t take the risk. “For the moment, I guess.” Mira did not let her own uncertainty leach out into her voice. She attempted to sound self-assured, as if she were the one in charge at that moment.

“Well.” He let out a little sigh. “I’m pleased to hear that.” The strange man smiled congenially. “But, we will have to sort out what to do with you. It appears you’re out of bounds here.”

Initiation: Chronicles of the Uprising Prequel

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost. But not all survivors were human.

In the new world order being a Vampire is a crime punishable by eternal servitude in the arena as a Gladiator of the Iron Gate. Mira, a newly turned vampire, must prove she has what it takes to survive in the human's world. It's kill or be killed. Immortality is not guaranteed.

This is more of me telling you what to expect than a review.

As the author tells me this is more of a prequel teaser. Initiation is a good little sample of the chronicles of the Uprising series. It contains a prequel where we experience Mira’s first days in captivity and the first fight that starts it all. Then you get to read the first two chapters of Dissension. The prequel does not contain spoilers so you can easily read it first.
