New Release Review: Between Life and Death (Between Life and Death Book 3) by Ann Christy

Description:

An endless, broiling summer bakes the deaders that roam the world. Veronica feels stuck in limbo while she waits for news that might bring an end to the nightmare that has overtaken their world. Between bashing heads and scavenging for what’s left, it’s all she can do to keep on going. Back at the warehouse complex, the rest of the group keeps watch over their group of captive in-betweeners and tries to stay alive.

At long last, Veronica finds a package left by Princeton and Violet at their drop-off point. Everything is finally going their way and a cure for the in-betweeners might finally be within their grasp.

But, nothing is easy in the post-nanite world of deaders and in-betweeners. Not everyone wants a cure for the nanite plague. Around every shiny, white cloud is a deep, black lining. This time, the clouds are smoke and there is a storm coming.

Between Life and Death is book three in the exciting, post-apocalyptic Between Life and Death trilogy. With mild language and occasional violence, (and some very gross undead), this series is suitable for ages 16 and up.

Review:

Between Life and Death is so amazing! Ann Christy went above and beyond anything I expected from the final book in this Trilogy. The story grows more intense than ever and had me on an emotional roller coaster that I thoroughly enjoyed.  It is around twice the length of the first two books and is cram packed with awesomeness!  I have to admit, I feel that this is the best zombie book I have read so far.

I love the unexpected direction that Between Life and Death took on. There are some heart breaking parts that go along with it, but makes it worth even more. Sacrifices has to be made so the human race can survive. Then we get not one, but two epilogues! One tells what happens months down the road and Two tells where they are years down the road! I love being able to find out what happens next, where the characters end up.
The ending is perfect and bittersweet.

Veronica and crew are still surviving as best they can, while waiting for word from Preston at the hospital. Emily has improved some, but how much can she improve with the nanites inside changing her. The group finally receives hope of a cure. They also find that the in-betweener and deaders are not their only worries anymore. Something horrible is happening to survivors. They also make new discoveries about the in-betweeners that blows them away. When it all comes to a head, who will survive and who will parish?

Ann Christy, you done an outstanding job with Between Life and Death and are a great writer. I cannot stress enough about how much I love this book.  I can’t wait to read more of Ann’s books.

About the Author
I’m a recently retired Navy Commander and secret science fiction writer. Since retiring, I work on my books as obsessively as I worked for the military and I still can’t figure out what I should wear if I can’t wear a uniform. I live by the sea under the benevolent rule of my canine overlords and a variety of unruly family members.

My first published series, Silo 49, cemented my desire to write fiction and it’s paved the way for a whole slew of new books. Strikers, Yankari: A Talking Earth Tale, The In-Betweener as well as a bunch of creepy (or creepily-cool) stories in published anthologies have already come out. And there is so much more to come.

I love to hear from readers so drop me a line! (No, really, I’m not even just saying that to be nice. I really do love to hear from readers!)

Scales A Falling in Deep Collection novella by Pauline Creeden
published on May 26, 2015
  Goodreads | Amazon

DESCRIPTION:

Verona is a bottom feeder. She is the one mer in her clan who is considered the ugliest and least intelligent. Growing up with the constant bullying and abuse wasn’t the worst of what her kind had in store for her. At seventeen years old, she must now endure “The Reckoning.” The scales will measure her worth to her clan. Will she endure thirty days as a land-walker to gather information and knowledge to appease her clan and return a valued member? Will she wait three years, until she is twenty, and find a mer of her kind to accept her and marry her? Or will she suffer exile for the rest of her life?

Woman in water

EXCERPT:

TO KEEP FROM SCREAMING, I bite hard on my lip. The copper mixture of blood and saltwater mingles on my tongue. Mer claws rake against my back. The barnacles on the post to which I’m tied stab me in the chest. Pain sets my body on fire. Everything burns. I squeeze my eyes shut tight and keep my silence. “Ugly.” “Repugnant.” “Unsightly.” “Ignorant.” “Bottom Feeder.” Each word cuts as deep in my flesh as the physical wounds my clan inflicts. It can’t last long. I can endure this. As soon as the sharks catch scent of my blood they will come, and the Mer will scatter. The world spins around me like a whirlpool. My breaths come quick and shallow, my heart pounds faster in my ears. Each second is an eternity, until I realize fresh wounds are not adding to the burning in my skin. The elder’s sharp tongue whispers in my ear. “Now you will be measured.” My wrists fall free of the post as he cuts the ties. Exile. My Reckoning has begun.

REVIEW:

I find SCALES to be a great little novella. It captured my attention quickly and didn’t let go. I read Scales in one sitting and was left wanting more. Pauline Creeden is a great story teller. I am never disappointed when I read one of her books. Scales is no exception, it is amazing. I like the contrast between the normally logical mer and the emotional mer, who is considered a bottom feeder. I find Verona very relatable and felt sadness for her situation. The storyline is easy to follow with added twist to keep it interesting.  I am glad that the first 2 chapters of SALT are included, so I could get a taste of where the story is headed next.  Wow! I can’t wait to get my hands on that book! It has some fascinating twist that will be fun to explore when it is released.

Verona is a mer who is considered the lowest of the low in her culture. Labeled a bottom feeder and exiled from her home, she has to learn to fend for herself.  She is left with a choice to either remain in exile or go live with the landwalkers, that she fears, for 30 days and gather useful information to be accepted back as a valued member of society.  She gets help from unexpected sources in her fight to survive and she finds there is danger lurking around every coral when you are alone.

New Release: Review: Nokken (Undraland book 2) By Mary E. Twomey

Description:

Lucy Kincaid wanted a simple life with a white picket fence, but once Jens took her to Undraland, she knew that wouldn't be in the cards. Learning to maneuver the landmines of laplanding with her boyfriend’s best friend is more than Lucy bargained for. Prince Jamie has access to Lucy’s every thought, making it impossible to have a moment to herself, or run away from her problems.

Pesta, the evil Siren, wants Lucy dead, and will stop at nothing to protect her kingdom that slowly sucks the life from the magical people of Undraland. Nik and Jens lead the way with Lucy as they battle innumerable foes to tear down Pesta's portal in Nøkken.

Review:

This book is amazing! Nokken is an outstanding sequel to Undraland. I was swept away into the world Mary E. Twomey created and I just couldn’t put the book down. Her passion comes through in her writing and helps brings it all to life. Nokken is full of action, danger and romance with unexpected twist. I just love how we get to learn more about the members of the group as they travel, it just makes them so much more real.  The cliffhanger had me screaming NOOOO! I so got left in a bad place, all up in the air on some heart wrenching moments.  I just can’t wait for book 3 to see what happens next. I bet it will be even better!

Lucy and her cohorts continue their quest to destroy the portals to the Be throughout Undraland. They run into danger around every turn and find they have even more issues since Lucy and Jamie are now Laplanded. Jamie is not the only inhabitant of Undraland that is cursed and that can put them all in direr circumstances.  Lucy begins to see there is more to her partners then meets the eye. Throughout the story love continues to blooms.

Review: Complication (Chronicles of the Uprising Book 2) by K.A. Salidas

Description:

Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Magistrate, Mira travels west, toward the coast. With three weakened human fugitives accompanying her, she searches for the mythical land of Sanctuary.

After encountering a pack of wolf shifters, headed by the charismatic—and brazen—Stryker, Mira learns that Sanctuary is real after all. Caldera Grove: home of the Otherkin. Hidden in the mouth of a dormant volcano, it has protected its residents from humans since the early days following the great cataclysm. For Mira— a vampire— Caldera Grove is a land of peace; an escape from the relentless persecution of the humans who once enslaved her, and an end to the daily struggle and bloodshed of being a gladiator.

For the humans accompanying her, Caldera Grove means death. Humans, greedy and untrustworthy creatures, are destroyed before they can penetrate its borders.

To plead her case for entry into Caldera, Mira must abandon her companions, albeit temporarily, and follow Stryker into the heart of the city. What she finds within Caldera Grove presents her with an unenviable decision between her own desires for freedom and peace, or honor and the human companions who risked it all for her.

Review:

What a great adventure. I started reading and just couldn’t put it down. I was up all night, because I got so caught up in this book that time just slipped away.  I find it all so intriguing. Katie Salidas has done a wonderful job on this vampire tale. I love the unexpected twist in Complication. At times I would think I had it all figured out and then I would be hit with something I didn’t expect. I just love how some of the characters can overcome generations of prejudice between their species to save the lives of the other. Mira is my favorite character. She stands for what she believes in and doesn’t back down, even though her mouth gets her into a world of trouble.  She has spirit that can’t be broken. The description of the Sanctuary was amazing, so magical. I could see it all in my head and it is beautiful.  I can’t wait to see what happens next, where this journey will take Mira from here. Now I’m even starting to wonder about a possible love interest in her life.

In Complication the Mira and her companions hit the road in search of a sanctuary, while battling to stay out of reach of their pursuers. Danger lies ahead and behind. What can they do to survive? Mira discovers the sanctuary at last. What she finds there is beyond what she could have ever imagined, but there is one problem. No human can know where it is and will be killed before they can enter. So she is left to decide where her loyalties lie. Can she leave her companions to die for a chance at the life she always believed she wanted?

Claudy Conn
However, my daughter lectured me and said that I should write about myself like I write my stories—so here goes…

While I have a fanciful imagination, I am a Capricorn—‘sure and steady’, and the obvious conflict leaves me jumbled. I have a computer, yes (invaluable), but I still jot down ideas on a scrap piece of paper, or a napkin in a restaurant. My imagination follows me wherever we go and sees so much more than meets the eye, and very often my husband will ask, ‘where are you now, baby?’

My dad was the one who clicked into my brain early on, and opened my mind to a world where a girl/woman could be so much more than ‘pretty in pink’. He told me to soar, and soaring for me, was writing.

We love horses and riding and when we migrated from New York to North Carolina we brought our barn with us—and yes, I’d rather muck out a stall than clean a house! My Irish, blue-eyed husband had to have a wolf and so we brought in our little hybrid wolf pup to our home. She is ¾ wolf/ ¼ German shepherd named Cherokee. Her 3 yr. old son (Rocky) is huge and eats everything and anything he can find and weighs more than 170 pounds!

Ireland and Scotland gave us the Fae and the Druids. In Ireland you can still visit the ‘Faery Mounds’. Think of the possibilities. I have and I’d love for you to join me as I explore them. So then, come with me and let’s see where we can go…

Julia Mills
I am a sarcastic, southern woman that would rather spend all day laughing than a minute crying. I have 2 of the most amazing daughters ever created, a menagerie of animals and a voracious appetite for reading. I decided to write the stories running through my brain and am having an absolute blast!! I read my first book, Dr Suess' Cat in The Hat, by myself at 4 and have been hooked ever since.
I believe a good book along with shoes, makeup and purses will never let a girl down. I know for a fact that all heroes in all the books I have ever read or will ever write pale in comparison to my hero, my dad! I am a sucker for a happy ending and love some hot sweaty sex with a healthy dose of romance.
I am still working on my story but can guarantee you that it will contain as love and laughter as I can cram into it!!!!! Dare to Dream! Have the Strength to Try EVERYTHING! Never Look Back!

Brandy L Rivers is the author of the Others of Edenton and Others of Seattle series. There are more Others of Edenton and Others of Seattle books in the works.

She lives in Western Washington with her husband and three kids, where she is already working on future stories in each of the series and several other projects.

Cynthia St. Aubin
I like gravy.
This has nothing to do with the rest of my bio, but I thought you ought to know.
About the writing thing...

I wrote my first play when I was six and made my brothers perform it for my parents. I charged gum wrappers for admission (a steal, in my opinion, considering I had handed out the gum wrappers ahead of time). While I seriously doubt you'll be seeing any of my formative work on Broadway anytime soon, I can credit these early experiments with the first of many important lessons I learned about writing: no matter how brilliant your manuscript is, some kid can go streaking butt-ass nekkid across the living room, and totally undermine your vision.
Everyone watches the naked kid because running across the living room with your cheeks flapping in the breeze is friggin' hilarious.
Cue the light bulb moment. People like funny stuff!
I never quite gave up on the writing thing, even as I tried my hand at being a dusty academic turned Executive Assistant
(they paid me to nag! How cool is that?), but in those quiet moments when expense reports had been filed and to-do items checked off, the funny people in my head kept talking to me.

Yes, I know they have medication for that. It's called vodka.

Since they discourage drinking at work, I started writing instead. What came out was an amalgamation (vocabulary!) of all the things I love: funny stuff, art, psychology, food, people, and paranormal critters!

Et voila! The Case Files of Dr. Matilda Schmidt, Paranormal Psychologist were born.

When I'm not sitting in my office watching cat videos and pretending to write, I like cooking, knitting (badly), and reading anything that makes me laugh (like my bank statements).

I live in Colorado with my brilliant husband and three surly cats.
