Review:

Wow! What an ending to a fabulous series! It has been quite an exciting ride in the Brilliant Darkness series with the main characters facing many obstacles and dangers. The Fire Sisters is no exception! A.G. Henley has brought us another riveting chapter in this dystopian tale. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next! I started reading and I just couldn’t put it down. The Fire Sisters brings us excitement, love, doubt, danger and so much more! Oh, and there is zombies, but they are not your run of the mill zombies. So I would recommend this book even to readers who do not care for zombies.

I just love how this story goes to show that there is more to people than meets the eye and there is more than one way to solve a problem. I am glad that not all the characters are easy to figure out as well. Some had me guessing the whole time.

A.G. Henley brings the story to life through her words and made me feel like I was there. There was just enough detail to paint a clear picture of it all and to draw me into their world. I feel The Fire Sisters is a must read, but it you haven’t read the rest of the series start with book 1 The Scourge. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Fennel and Peree big day has finally arrived, but before they can finish their partnering ceremony tragedy strikes! The children have been stolen away by a fierce group called The Fire Sisters! Now the search is on. They must now travel into the dangerous unknown to retrieve their treasured guru (children) before it is too late. They run into trouble along the way and find help in the most unlikely places. Sacrifices will have to be made and lines will be crossed. Will they find the children in time? Will Fennel and Peree ever get their happily ever after? Or is it The End?
~Candy

Excerpt from The Fire Sisters:

“We lost them.” Derain’s voice buckles with grief. “They left one woman behind to fend us off with her arrows, and then she slipped away in the shadows of the branches, moving like the wind. We searched, but we couldn’t find them again.”
“Then we have no time to lose,” Nerang says. “A search party will leave as soon as possible. Who will go?”
There are a few declarations from the group. I hear Derain, and a woman’s high voice, like birdsong, that I think belongs to Amarina. I worked with her in the gardens. She sounds as breakable as a thin stalk of the maidengrass that grew around our water hole at home, but Kadee told me she’s a skilled tracker and woodswoman who can coax fire out of little more than a handful of damp kindling.
“My brothers and me are going for sure,” Moray growls. I don’t trust them much, but they’re tough and cunning. We need whoever can help bring Frost and the children home.
“I’ll go.” My voice is strong, decided. I feel better for saying the words.
Peree squeezes my shoulders. “I will, too.”
I’m afraid to enter an unfamiliar forest, chasing after a group of kidnapping warrior women. I’m no fighter.
But I want to go for Kora and her family. They were the first to befriend Peree and me when we washed up in Koolkuna, helpless as babies.
I want to go for Thrush, Moon, and Petrel. I know all too well how it feels to lose a brother.
I want to go for Frost. Pregnant and afraid, she risked her father, Osprey’s, rage to free Eland and me when we were trapped in the Lofty trees.
I want to go for Nerang, who saved our lives, and for the anuna, who took us in, even if some might unfairly blame us for this tragedy now.
And… I want to go for Eland. I couldn’t save him. I can still save these children.
Everyone has done so much for us. How can I sit here, enjoying the protection and comforts they secured for us, hoping someone else will help?
I can’t.
I’ll go, and I’ll do whatever it takes to find Kora and the others and bring them home.

Interview:

I would like to introduce one of my favorite authors to all of you wonderful readers out there. A.G. Henley we are so glad to have you here with us today!

1.    Why don’t we start off with you telling us a little about yourself.

Thanks for having me! I SO appreciate bloggers for the good work you do to help authors get the word out about their books, and you’ve been especially kind to me. Thank you!

So, I’m a YA author with a now complete (hooray!) series of dystopian/post-apocalyptic books. The Brilliant Darkness series begins with The Scourge, a 2015 Next Generation Indie Book Award Finalist, and includes The Defiance and the just-released The Fire Sisters. There are also two novellas in the series. The series features a blind girl who believes she’s mysteriously protected from flesh-eating creatures called the Scourge, but she hasn’t been tested—until now.

I’m also a psychologist, which makes my workweek an interesting mix of fantasy and heart-wrenching reality.

2.    I know it is good to hear an encouraging word now and then to know how much the readers love your books and to keep you going. So what is your favorite comment from a fan that really lifted your spirits?

I LOVE my readers, and I have such nice ones. They are incredibly supportive. One comment that has always stuck in my brain came very early after I first published The Scourge in January 2012. I was not planning to self-publish, but at the time I couldn’t interest an agent in my writing. I thought no one would buy or read my book.

A woman, an early reader, said she was so engrossed in The Scourge that she read while trying to do her housework, and while changing her baby’s diaper. I was thrilled that the initial response was that the book was hard to put down. I see that as a primary goal for an author: to make you lose sleep, because you can’t stop reading : ) Consider that fair warning! You can see her actual comment here, third one down on the left:

3.     I don’t want to give away any details in Fire Sisters to spoil the series for everyone else, so I will just focus on the series as a whole. I just love your Brilliant Darkness series! How did you come up with such a great idea for a story?

Thank you so much! I initially came up with the idea of people trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world full of swamps. I figured they’d move up into the trees. But, what if half the people moved up and wouldn’t share with the other half? That’s how the two main groups in The Scourge, the Lofties and Groundlings, were born. (The swamp idea kind of fell away, although water is very important to the story.)

Then, I thought, what if the main character, a Groundling, was blind? And THEN, I thought, and what if there were zombie-like creatures that only she was protected from, due to her blindness??? And that was it. Fennel and the Scourge were born.

4.     I find the concept of the Lofties (tree dwellers) and Groudlings (Ground dwellers) so fascinating. Then there is the dreaded Scourge. Can you tell us a little about each of them?

Lofties are all fair-haired and fair-skinned. Groundlings are dark. Once a year, the two groups meet for the Exchange, when they trade their infants based on their coloring. It’s a terrible time for both groups, but they’ve been locked in this tradition for generations. The Lofties hold the safety and security of the trees and treetops, while the Groundlings control the community’s only water supply. So they have a tense, mistrustful relationship, as you might imagine. The Groundlings are particularly bitter, because they have to hide in cold, dark caves for days when the Scourge come, because the Lofties won’t share their trees.

The Scourge are vicious flesh-eating creatures that chase down and devour, or turn, any humans they come across—except the Sightless, like Fennel. I should say here that if you don’t like blood and gore, don’t be afraid of The Scourge. Most people who say they aren’t zombie fans, and are easily grossed out or afraid, don’t find my series to be objectionable at all. It’s really fantasy romance : )

5.  Your characters have a ways of getting themselves into so many bad situations and some causes problems for those around them. Which character(s) gave you the most problems when trying to write their story?

Hmm, I’m not sure any of them gave me problems. I LOVE creating characters. They usually just jump into my head fully formed!

6.    I love so many of the characters in The Brilliant Darkness series so I can’t pick just one. Who was your favorite character to write?

I’m attached to my two mains, Fennel and Peree. It was so fun to build their relationship from scratch. But the most fun to write was Moray. He’s a bad guy, really, but he has heroic, good guy moments. I really tried hard to write him so that you couldn’t classify him, so he wouldn’t be black and white. I hope I succeeded right through The Fire Sisters.

7.     I know right now the series consist of 3 full length novels and 2 novellas. So is this it or do you feel there will be a spin-off or prequel in the future?

Hmm, this is it for NOW. Funny you should mention a spin-off, though. I did try to leave the ending somewhat open for a few characters, and there are many more questions about the world of the Scourge…

8.    What are you working on now? Has a new story started to bring itself to life?

Thanks for asking! I’m writing a YA time travel short story right now for an indie anthology that will release in March. I met a group of women writers here in Denver who all write YA and are mostly indies. We have done a few writing retreats together, and at the last one someone said, “Why don’t we publish a short story anthology?” So, Tick Tock: Seven Tales of Time came to be! It’s so much fun to write a new character in a new world. I could totally see this leading to its own series down the road…

I’m also revising a novel I wrote last year that is YA speculative fiction. It will be a duology, if all goes as planned.

9.   There is one question we like to ask all of our authors. Is there any advice you would like to give to the aspiring authors out there?

Read a lot. Write a lot. Honestly, that’s what being an author boils down to. I read, write, and create all day, and it’s a privilege to get paid to do it!

10. We would like to thank you for joining us today A.G. Henley you are amazing! Now I would like to give you the last word. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your books or yourself that I did not ask about? Or is there something you would like to say to all the readers out there?

Thank you so much for reading and supporting the work of authors and bloggers! I can create books and worlds, but that’s only half the equation of reading. Readers provide their own lens and interpretation to what I write, and they bring richness to the experience of writing that would otherwise be very solitary. We’re a team – and I appreciate my other half!

Thank you again for having me on the blog! It was a lot of fun.

Spotlight Tour: A Tiger’s Bride (A Lion's Pride book 4) by Eve Langlais

Title: A Tiger’s Bride

Series: #4 A Lion’s Pride

Author: Eve Langlais

Description:

When at first you don’t succeed–turn to abduction.

It’s all in a day’s work when this Russian Siberian tiger meets the woman he wants.

An accidental kidnapping? Check.

A forced marriage? Check.

A virgin bride? Damn. There go his plans for seduction and here comes the pressure into making her first time perfect. Because everyone knows that’s the one she’ll remember, forever. Gulp.

Add in a plane crash as well as hunters out to capture them and the heat is truly on.

Can this suave Russian mobster meet the challenge?

Short Excerpt:

Now some would probably say, if he knew he was being chased, and if he valued his hide, then all he had to do was give Teena up. Leave her behind and go home.

To that, the man, not the beast, growled, “Hell no.”

But escaping with her was only part of the steps to ensure their future. Once he reached his homeland, he’d have only a little time to convince her to keep him before the council became involved. They tended to frown on shifters, even practically royal ones, abducting women.

Apparently it was so eighteen hundreds.

Long Excerpt:

Awareness came with the speed of cold honey spooling from a dangling spoon. Slowly. So slowly, and that was why it took the third time for her to grasp someone spoke.

“Say I do.”

“Hunh?” Eyes closed, and the lids too heavy to lift, her mouth a fuzzy peach in need of water, Teena’s mind struggled to wake from the most molasses sleep ever.

“Say I do,” hissed an accented voice, a voice that seemed familiar. But it was the scent that made her smile. Manly musk intermixed with a spicy cologne. It seemed her Russian admirer was still at her side. Had she fallen asleep on him at the party?

It was so hard to remember.

“Repeat after me. I. Do.”

What did she do? Forcing her brain into gear, she strove to recall events. Last she remembered, she was weaving back to the house after her sister’s wedding—drunk as hell because she was so mad at her interfering family—when Dmitri, that sexy Russian, waylaid her. He’d made sure the ground didn’t get fresh with her body parts. Instead, he let them get fresh with his solid frame.

He held her in his arms. Said stuff. Nice stuff. But forget that and fast forward to the exciting part where he kissed her.

Oh my. Upon her he bestowed a masterful kiss that melted her. She remembered the sense of weakness in her limbs. The roam of his hands, then…?

Her brow wrinkled. She couldn’t recollect anything past the amazing kiss.

Nothing. At all.

Had she seriously fallen asleep during the most intense embrace of her life?

Was this why Dmitri held her in his arms, his musky scent surrounding her? “Wake, little kitten. Just for a moment. I need you to say I do.”

“I do?” Do what? Surely he didn’t demand permission to kiss her again? Was he after something else? Blerg. She wished her brain wasn’t such a sluggish mess.

Giving her cobwebbed thoughts a mental shake, she pried her eyes open in time to see Dmitri’s handsome face hovering close to hers. She also heard the words, “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

What!

Before she could grasp what had happened, lips pressed against hers in a molten touch that melted her questions and awakened a fire. The kiss didn’t help her regain her senses. On the contrary, she slipped into a pleasurable state with only one real thought in mind—more.

More kisses. More heat. More Dmitri.

The arms wrapped around her body held her upright and a good thing, too, seeing as how her legs had the consistency of soft rubber. A tiny part of her remarked she should protest, or at least make an effort to assert some kind of control.

She wasn’t firing on all cylinders. A sluggishness still held her. It occurred to her she should cry and be frightened, and yet…

She truly was enjoying the soft mesh of lips and the warmth of his breath. Or she was until she found herself deposited in a chair. Talk about a rude awakening.

Her body lamented the loss of the warmth from his while her inner lioness meowed in frustration. A frustration she understood all too well, given the ardor he woke refused to settle so easily.

Struggling against the lassitude in her body, she managed to flutter her eyes open, not that it helped her comprehension much. She didn’t recognize her surroundings.

A pen was pushed into her hands. “Sign here,” Dmitri’s accented voice purred in her ear.

“What is it?” she muttered through numb lips as she struggled to remain awake. She peered blearily at the white sheet in front of her, to no avail. The words on the paper wavered.

“It is what you want.”

Truly? Because…I want him.

Without giving it a second thought, she signed.

Then he did too, using the same pen she had, his bold signature alongside hers on the marriage certificate.

Blink.

Re-read.

Nope, the words on the paper hadn’t change.

She stabbed a finger at the paper, not trusting herself to speak. But if she had, it might have sounded a lot like her father, but with fewer swear words. What the fuck just happened?

He answered her unspoken question. “We are husband and wife, little kitten.”

Oh my. How unexpected.

Married. She was married. To Dmitri. I am married to the tiger.

Hunh, a coerced wedding, a first for the family and certainly never a disaster her sister had ever managed.

Point for me?

No, because Meena evaded Dmitri’s plans.

I, on the other hand, fell like a domino. Worse, I didn’t see it coming. I really thought he liked me. Thought he’d meant it when he said he would woo her and prove his intent.

What a jerk, kidnapping her like this and marrying her on the sly. Making her his wife.

His wife?

Could a lioness giggle? Her inner feline certainly seemed a tad too pleased.

His mate. The mental rumble vibrated through her body like a ghostly purr, one that left her senses alive.

Are you going to stand up and assert your rights?

“You can’t force me to marry you. Tell him.” She addressed the latter to the man dressed in a suit with a clerical collar of black and white, some kind of religious guy. Surely he wouldn’t condone this farce. “Tell him it doesn’t count because I didn’t agree.”

“You said I do,” Dmitri reminded her.

“Because you told me to while I wasn’t even awake. It doesn’t count. And why is that priest ignoring me?”

“Little kitten, if you calm down, we can—”

“I will not calm down.” She lunged from the chair, only belatedly realizing the flimsiness of it.

The plastic bucket chair with its metal legs, a relic from the seventies, cracked. The hand she’d used to push off slid as the plastic snapped, and she lost her balance. Tipping sideways, she threw out her hand, but her reflexes were still kind of woozy and she missed, hitting the floor with her shoulder then a ricochet of her head. Damned industrial marble floor.

She lay there, at an angle, stunned, and also exposing a lot more leg than she should. Through squinted eyes, she noted her skirt riding high on her hip.

Dmitri noticed too. Interest smoldered in his gaze, a gaze stolen by the collared man, who cleared his throat.

How dare he steal Dmitri’s attention?

Grrrr.

Who growled?

“Now, now, little kitten, give me a moment to deal with this obviously brave man, daring your vicious rage.”

“I am not vicious.” Vicious was her sister.

“I think you’re tougher than you know.”

Review: Revolution (Chronicles of the Uprising Book 3) by Katie Salidas

Description:

Peace is an illusion. Blood, violence, and death follow Mira like shadows.

Battle lines have been drawn between human and Otherkin, and a bloody war is on the horizon: one that will end in either a shift in the world’s balance of power...or ultimate destruction.

In spite of their strength, powers, and a rage known only by the oppressed, the Otherkin are evenly matched by the superior numbers of the human army. To tip the balance in their favor, the Otherkin need more soldiers – and their only options are the Gladiators of New Haven city.

Mira is sent across enemy lines to recruit any able-bodied vampires to her cause. But what she discovers along the way will blur the lines between friends and enemies. Seeds of doubt weaken Mira’s allegiance, and she finds herself torn between the old masters who used her as entertainment and the new ones who consider her as nothing more than a weapon.

As the war draws near, Mira will have to decide what she is truly fighting for.

Review:

Wow! This series just keeps getting better and better! Expect the unexpected. It kept me on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more. Mira’s story continues to evolve taking us to new and exciting places. The characters become more complex with some having hidden agendas. Revolution is action packed all the way to the end and then we are hit with a shocking conclusion. Katie Salidas is able to breathe the life of hope into this seemingly hopeless tale. This part of the journey takes Mira to the point of no return with the peace she seeks nowhere in sight. War is here and the death toll is adding up. The question is who will end up on top and what will they do with losing side?

I have enjoyed this series and consider it a must read for all of the vampire and dystopian fans out there. It is truly a journey worth taking.

The time has come for Mira to face her fears and return to the one place she never wanted to see again, but she would do anything to save the ones she cares about. The battle begins. Lives will be lost and betrayal is at hand. Not everyone in Mira’s new found life can be trusted. The stakes are higher than they have ever been before. It is time to free her people and stop the slavery or die trying.

New Release: Review: The Sapphire Legend: Part 1 by E. L. Tenenbaum

Description:

Sapere has always been different. In her tribe, select families are blessed with a gift that is passed through the generations from father to son. But something went wrong when Sapere was born, because she has her family's gift and she shouldn’t.

When Sapere's village is attacked the night of her wedding, the survivors flee to the Wild in hopes of finding refuge in a dangerous place stalked by deadly predators. There they struggle to protect what little remains of their tribe and their traditions, many of which don’t seem to fit into their new life. Out here, Sapere feels like an outsider on the precipice of two worlds, unable to fit into the old way, unaccepted by the new, and terrified of being shunned by both.

Through the survivors' fight for survival, Sapere learns that she can be a victim of circumstance or master of fate. Can she rise above the nature of her birth and mold her own future? Can she be herself and earn the villagers’ respect? Or will she forever be shackled by the anomaly that makes her different?

Review:

What an amazing read! The Sapphire Legend hits the ground running. It grabbed my attention from page 1 and held it the whole way through. E. L. Tenenbaum’s debut book is a definite winner. I just love her writing style. I found the story to be seamless and alluring. She really brought this world to life for me. What an adventure with action, loss, discovery and a little love mixed in. The charters are unlike any others I have encountered. They are not shifters or hybrids but they have some feature akin to animals and some of the abilities as well, such as speed, heightened sense of smell and much more, but not everyone has them. I loved how the heroin acts like a real girl that has fears and insecurities even while she pushes ahead. In the end I was left hanging with so many questions. I so want to find out what happens next and also to see if I was right about a couple of things, but alas I have to wait. To sum it up I find that The Sapphire Legend part 1 is a must read.

Sapere is unlike any other female in her village. She has a gift. The problem is that the gift is only passed from father to son. So how did she come by it and what will the others do if they find out? She bears the marks on her arms that could reveal her secrets. On her wedding night a horrific event sends Sapere and the survivors of her tribe seeking shelter deep in the Wild with danger around every corner. Now Sapere has to make a choice use her gift to help her people survive or continue to hide in the shadows.
